Rare earth mines, projects and companies by US state
22 US states have a tracked rare earth mine, plant, company or pilot, and 11 of them have a mine or project. Wyoming has the most mines and projects (3) and Texas the most plants and mills (4). Only California has an active primary mine. Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas have a page for a historic deposit only.

Which US states have rare earth mines and plants?
11 states have a tracked rare earth mine or project (Wyoming, Texas, California, Utah, Nebraska, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, Florida and Georgia), and 12 states have a plant or mill. 3 more states appear because a company or pilot is based or active there. Each name opens the state page.

Lemhi Pass spans Idaho and Montana and counts in both. A company with sites in several states appears in each. Counts of companies include headquarters, sites and pilots.

Which states have a historic rare earth deposit but nothing tracked?
Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas have no tracked mine, plant, company or pilot, but the USGS describes a historic or prospect deposit in each: Pea Ridge, Hicks Dome and Magnet Cove. Each has its own page with the USGS record and the activity found since 2024.
- Missouri: Pea Ridge Washington County, about 97 km southwest of St. Louis. Four rare earth breccia pipes cutting a magnetite and hematite iron orebody, with rare earths in apatite tailings.
- Illinois: Hicks Dome Hardin and Pope Counties, southern Illinois, in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district. A dome 14.5 km across over an alkaline intrusion, with a thorium and rare earth breccia at depth.
- Arkansas: Magnet Cove Hot Spring County, south-central Arkansas. Cretaceous alkaline and carbonatite complex (USGS 2002: carbonatite with residual enrichment).

Questions about rare earth by state
Which US state has the most rare earth mines?
Wyoming has the most tracked rare earth mines and projects, with 3: Brook Mine, Halleck Creek and Bear Lodge. None is producing yet. The only active primary rare earth mine in the United States is Mountain Pass in California.
Which states produce rare earths today?
Mountain Pass in California is the only active primary rare earth mine. Plants that separate, make metal or magnets, or recycle are operating in Texas, Utah, Arizona, Oklahoma, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio and New Hampshire, and demonstration plants operate in Wyoming and Colorado. Most plants are small, and more are being built.
Which US states make rare earth magnets?
Magnet plants are tracked in Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and North Carolina. They include MP Materials in Texas, USA Rare Earth in Oklahoma, eVAC Magnetics in South Carolina, Noveon in Texas and Vulcan Elements in North Carolina, with more planned.
Why are some states listed with only companies or pilots?
New York, Pennsylvania and North Dakota have no tracked mine or plant on the map. They appear because a company or pilot is based or active there: a headquarters, a Department of Energy coal-waste pilot or a university.
Are rare earths found in other states?
Yes. Rare earth occurrences are reported in 19 states (Department of Energy, cited by OSTI). This directory lists the states where a project, plant, company or pilot has been identified, and adds states as it tracks more. Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas have pages for the historic deposits the USGS describes there: Pea Ridge, Hicks Dome and Magnet Cove.
Sources and verification
Each profile lists its sources, a confidence grade and a verification date. Order of authority: official records (SEC filings, agency documents), company documents and technical reports, research papers, then independent press. Syndicated copies and reference works are labeled and are never the only source for a number. Company-reported figures are labeled as such, and non-binding deals are labeled "letter of intent" or "conditional".
